WORLD HEALTH Day on Sunday had as its theme Physical Exercise for Better Health.

WORLD HEALTH Day on Sunday had as its theme Physical Exercise for Better Health. This is because the world is in the grip of an obesity epidemic. Millions of people are dying every year because they are too fat.We should not make the mistake of dismissing obesity as a Western disease. It is also a chronic problem in developing countries and on the African continent.Lack of exercise causes people to become overweight and to develop diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, high blood pressure and various cancers. Diabetes cases at Mulago have gone up five times between 1962 and 1998 while stroke and heart conditions doubled. In Africa cardio-vascular problems now kill more people than malaria. The problem is that many people in towns and cities, especially office workers, are eating too much food and not taking enough exercise. It is not good to be overweight. Some people believe it is a status symbol and a sign of wealth but in reality it only means that you will die sooner. It is especially bad for middle class parents to allow their children to become obese. It will reduce their life expectancy, their job prospects and their general joy in life.Obesity is crazy because it is completely unnecessary. The solution is free. All people need to do it is to exercise regularly, for 30 minutes every day, or three days per week. A walk in your local neighbourhood is sufficient so long as you get hot. In addition try and eat a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruit. You will soon feel and see the difference.Ends
