By Cynthia NankumbaCHRISTIANS are yet to be treated to more beautiful Easter melodies this weekend. To climax the festive season, the Kampala Singers, a city-based choral music group, is to perform classical music at Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala. The group was established by local and foreign choral musicians in the 1960s to perform classical Easter and Christmas carols for the city folk. The group has kept up its team spirit and exceptional performances. The group, comprising local professional singers, students and lecturers from the Kampala Music School and foreign choral musicians mainly from Britain, is to treat the audience to works by distinguished composers. According to Sam Lankester, the group’s music director, the audience will be treated to exquisite and sophisticated works by Wolfgang Mozart, a famous 18th century composer of the Kyrie and Credo fame. The audience will also enjoy Stainer’s Crucifiction, a swing jazz number by John Rutter and various classical works dating from 1500 to the 20th century. The over 50-member choral group has been perfecting the music for the last three months.Lankester, an organ graduate from Cambridge University, London, says the audience is in for an exciting musical evening, with both performances beginning at 5.30 pm and yet all free of charge.ends
