By Frederick KiwanukaKIWOKO Hospital in Luweero district has trained 49 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the on-going safe motherhood programme. The training is to make up for the deficiency of trained midwives to handle pregnancy cases in Nakaseke county. The last batch of 26 TBAs from Wakyato sub-county, were passed out on Friday by the programme officer, National Population Secretariat, Agnes Kisembo. A total of 23 others had earlier been passed out in Kikamulo sub-county. Each of the trained TBAs was given a bicycle and a delivery kit under the programme which Kiwoko Hospital instituted with the help of the Population Secretariat, UNFPA and the health ministry. Kiwoko Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Nicholas Wooding, in a statement read by his deputy Dr. James Nyonyintono, said the project is to equip TBAs with ways of managing pregnant mothers. Wooding told the community in Wakyato sub-county to go only to TBAs who have been trained and not bicupuli practitioners who learn through mistakes.Ends
