‘Include Culture In Sex Education’

By Lillian NalumansiThe sex education syllabus should have an input from all traditional leaders in Uganda, Buganda clan leaders have said.Buganda government minister for clan homage and the King’s royal visits Hajji Mustafa Mutyaba said children should be taught traditional norms that guard against sexual promiscuity until marriage.Mutyaba said this on Tuesday at an advocacy workshop at Pope Paul Memorial Centre, Ndeeba.“Our ancestors had very strong cultures that prevented girls from having sex before marriage, a situation that has since changed. The sex education syllabus should not be drawn without the input from clan heads from all clan leaders,” Mutyaba said. “The sex that those drawing up this curriculum know is that they have watched on television sets. Clan leaders from Buganda, Bugisu, the north should be consulted so that their views on sex are included. Children have to learn both the traditional and modern ways,” he added. The workshop attended by clan leaders was organised by the Nnabagereka’s office, Population Secretariat and UNFPA.The participants were educated on reproductive health, girl-child education, population and development.Some clan leaders disagreed over the issue of giving birth to few children.Ends
