SIX people died and another 19 are in hospitals struggling for their lives after a Lira bound GateWay bus they were travelling in crushed yesterday morning, reports Steven Candia.Police deputy spokesman John Kimera yesterday confirmed the incident and said three men and three women perished in the 11:00am accident that occurred 2km from Dokolo trading centre.He identified the dead as Jane Nambuya, Private Elia Sanyu attached to the 4th division Gulu and John Oketch of Dokolo, Lira, a former headmaster of Aremu Primary School in Kaberamaido.Others are Ismail Omo, a mechanic of Gateway bus Company, Hellen Atoo, of Pageyo Pece, Gulu and one middle-aged woman.Kimera said before her death, Nambuya gave the police at the scene a telephone number 077-568821 care of John Etyang.Kimera said five people died on the spot and the sixth died at Dokolo health centre. All the six bodies were transferred to Lira hospital mortuary.The injured were admitted to Lira and Soroti hospitals in critical condition.Kimera said the accident occurred when the Isuzu bus, UAB728D, that had travelled from Busia, veered off the road and knocked a mango tree before being stopped by a big anthill. The front of the bus was badly damaged.Witnesses of the stomach-churning spectacle said the bus was speeding.Ends
