It Was Aswa, Not Wasswa, Who Announced The Amin Coup
SIR— It was interesting to read excerpts of Lt Col Bernard Rwehururu’s book as serialised in The East African.
SIR— It was interesting to read excerpts of Lt Col Bernard Rwehururu’s book as serialised in The East African. It is the first written record of the state of things in Amin’s army during the liberation war. However, I would like to seek clarification from Col Rwehururu regarding the army officer who announced Amin’s 1971 coup on Radio Uganda. Rwehururu says it was one Wasswa who later fled to Kenya, was arrested and brought back to Uganda, then executed. Other records, say it was Aswa from West Nile, not Wasswa. I have listened to the recordings of the 1971 coup announcement many times. Indeed the person’s accent was that of somebody from West Nile, not Buganda or elsewhere. Could Col Rwehururu set record straight?Billie O’KadameriParis, France
