SIR— I would like to comment on the ongoing armed thugs in northern Uganda and express my dissatisfaction with Hon. Norbert Mao, (Gulu Municipality MP) on his recent remarks on a day and date I do not want to recall, that Government should hold talks with the Lords Resistance Army rebels of Joseph Kony. It is laughable and sad that Kony is not fighting to liberate the people of Uganda from what he, the multipartyists and the reform agendaists call dictatorship. To me, Kony should be crushed and isolated an Mao should know that it is useful to be understood by all. So always see reality and talk sense, especially in a situation like this one.I believe that Kony’s fighting has been set with different aims. Liberation cannot mean shedding of innocent blood. Mao should now know if he had not known earlier that we have lost many of Uganda’s most good and great citizens at the hands of Kony. If he has failed to unite the people of Acholi, how will he liberate the whole Uganda?LRA rebels have murdered abducted spread diseases, raped, maimed, displaced and even tortured hundreds of thousands of people in northern Uganda. The percentage of orphans and widows has increased, leaving many homeless. Is this liberty? Kony claims to be a servant of God yet he does all these horrible things to God’s people like-what he did to the St Mary’s Aboke Girls, the Atiak massacre and many others. He even forces young boys to join rebel activities while young girls are forced into premature marriages. I am sure God would never want to see his people suffer in such a stupid way. If Kony is a liberator, he should treat people as Moses did when he led the Israelites out of slavery. Many avenues of dialogue with Kony and his rebels had been tried but abused like the efforts of Mrs Betty Bigombe, former minister for the pacification of the north, Members of Parliament from Acholi, religious leaders and Acholi elders. I don’t see why time should be wasted again to talk to Kony and his rebels missionary works too has been at its slowest pace due to Kony’s rebel activities. Christian leaders as well as other non-governmental organisations have often had their activities interrupted. One wonders if this is really what God wants Kony to do to his people. Therefore, I proceed to assure Hon Mao, the multipartyists and the reform agendaists that our deadline to hold talks with Kony and his LRA expired sometime back. Any claim to it now is invalid.Captain James Fred Okello Kampala
