By John Eremu STATE minister for higher education, Betty Akech, wants the blanket 1.5 points given to girls joining government universities reviewed. Akech said the scheme, introduced a decade ago, benefits girls from well-established schools more than those from rural and disadvantaged areas. “I want to challenge researchers to find how the 1.5 points can benefit girls from rural schools. For God’s sake, let us not revise it for the purpose of scrapping, we still need it,” Akech said. She was yesterday launching three books written by women as part of the Eight International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women going on at Makerere University. The books published by Fountain Publishers included that on “Gender, Politics and Constitutional making in Uganda” by state minister for ethics Miria Matembe and “Women’s Access to Higher Education in Africa; The case of Uganda” by the dean faculty of social sciences, Dr. Joy Kwesiga.
