By Geoffrey KamaliGunmen yesterday kidnapped the wife of Capt Hajji Amir Mugwanya, the deputy to Col Elly Kayanja, Operation Wembley commander. The gunmen raided Mugwanya’s home in Seeta, Mukono district.Kayanja is also the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) deputy director general. Operation Wembley is the code-name for the anti-crime campaign in the country.Mugwanya is also a senior ISO field officer, who has been active in the operation to rid the city of gangsters. He told The New Vision last evening that three gunmen drove to his house near the town at about 1:00pm and put his mixed-blood wife, Mariam Babu, at gun-point.They then forced her into the gate-away car and sped off towards Mukono town to an unknown destination, he added. The hijackers did not leave any message.“She has a four-month old baby which they forced her to abandon. There were two children at home but our neighbours also witnessed the incident,” he said in a trembling voice. The incident has sent shock waves in he area. There was a similar attack in the area by gunmen who raided Seeta Police post shortly after the 1996 elections.Mugwanya said he had received threats of death and kidnap from anonymous callers long before the operation started.“She hasn’t come back yet. I know those are our enemies. The white car they used had its number plates covered, except for the last letter, Q,” he said.Kayanja said most of his operatives had reported receiving similar threats of ambush, death and kidnap by anonymous callers.“It has now turned into reality. But we’ll not listen to those threats,” he said. Kayanja recently said he had been threatened by the most wanted suspect, Black.Ends
