Dear Counsellor,I cannot help falling asleep. I am a 15-year-old girl, in S.2 . For most people, sleep is a blessing but it has become a curse in my life. I have suffered from sleep attacks since the age of 10 when I was in P.4. people thought I was just lazy. My classmates have given me all kinds of nicknames related to sleeping. I constantly fall a sleep in class, and sometimes I can’t help dozing even in examination room! I try to go to bed early and get enough sleep at night. But it has never helped me. Sleep has made me to feel ashamed and isolated. How best can I overcome it?B.N —MukonoDear B.N,Sleep attack like the one you are experiencing is not psychological but a medical problem commonly referred to as narcolepsy (excess sleep). If it is not diagnosed and treated in time, it can make you a total slave and may affect your academic work severely. It equally has social implications since over-sleeping is usually associated with laziness. In its most severe states, narcolepsy causes memory loss. You need to see a medical doctor over this problem. Discuss it with your parents and suggest to them the possibility of visiting a medical consultant. You can still be helped. do not lose hope.Ends
