The key organ is the nucleus from which a 55-member singing group in Entebbe has derived inspiration for two-and half decades now.

The Sacred Heart Choir of Bugonga Catholic Parish is celebrating 25 years of leading the Entebbe Catholic Community in liturgical activities on September 7.

They will hold mass and a reception on that day at Bugonga.

The choir was on several occasions invited to sing at State House Entebbe, and for this, the still growing choir has earned itself a place within the Entebbe community.

In 1984, they were among the over 500 choristers from the best choirs in Kampala and Entebbe who performed at Namugongo in a mass that climaxed celebrations of the Uganda Catholic Centenary.
The group has also performed at Entebbe Mayor Stephen Kabuye’s residence on several occasions. The choir has several achievements that call for attention.

In 1994, they won choral singing competitions in Entebbe and in 1995, came second. Owing to the good performance, the choir received invitations to perform on various functions locally. According tot he choir’s publicity secretary, George Otim, in 1998, the group accompanied Stephen Kabuye on a four-day visit to Bukoba in Tanzania where they made several performances.

However, the choristers are not without any challenges. According to a choir’s executive member, Nicholas Azza, in the 1990’s the Entebbe Catholic Community accused them of pursuing elitist goals in the selection of songs that could only be appreciated by the educated few with a taste for European music.

This forced them to abandon their repertoire of hymns from the West Minister Hymnal and classical pieces to African and local compositions to increase the congregation’s feeling of being intimate with God during Holy Mass.

According to the chairman of the silver jubilee organising committee, James Mutabazi, the theme of the celebrations is ‘singing, an expression of Faith.’
