OVER 3,000 homes in Njeru town council in Mukono district have gained access to piped water, reports Charles Kakamwa.
The town engineer, Robert Taitika, has said the US$24.7m water project that started in 1994 and funded by the World Bank, is aimed at providing safe water to residents of Njeru and the neighbourhood.
“The target was 1,000 households but we are happy that the number even tripled,” he said. The National Water and Sewerage Corporation is carrying out the installation work.
Despite their proximity to water bodies like Lake Victoria and the River Nile, the Njeru residents had no access to safe water over the years and collected water from unprotected wells and springs.
Taitika said they suffered from epidemics associated with dirty water such as typhoid and cholera. Ends
