SIR— Thank you for the supplement on the “Silicon Valley†of Kampala and the information technology industry overview in The New Vision of August 8. As part of the supplement, there was an article under the heading “Computer use has evolved dramatically†in which I would like to correct some errors.
The first computer was an IBM System 360 and not 370, as stated. IT was also referred as International Technology instead of Information Technology.
The caption under the photo, it was erroneously stated that I was one of the pioneers of the IT industry in Uganda. I am from a much later generation. The pioneers are those who started off the entire data processing profession right from the special machines called tabulators which preceded the digital computer IBM System 360 introduced in the country in 1967.
The pioneers of IT in Uganda include the late E.K. Barongo, Blasio Kigozi, Willy Ssebunya, Ruth Mugerwa, Kunobwa and later Edward Bazanye-Sempebwa, Helen Anokbonggo, Muduse Ojala, Moses Yolyanaye and others.
