By Catherine Ntabadde KAMPALA City Council (KCC) spends about sh9m every week on garbage collection, the city secretary for hygiene, Anthony Francis Lubowa, has said. Lubowa told The New Vision on Wednesday that most of the city’s garbage disposed off at Kitezi dumping ground in Wakiso district was produced in homes. “We spend a lot of money on garbage. The refuse collection trucks are in bad condition and they keep breaking down. The money is used to repair the trucks and provide fuel,†he said. Despite KCC’s efforts to keep Kampala clean, garbage continues to accumulate in skips before it is disposed off. This has attracted flies in places where garbage skips are located. Lubowa admitted that not all garbage produced in the city was disposed off in time. “Garbage is a serious problem in the city and we are aware of it. The district has limited trucks to collect it. Even the few that are available have mechanical problems,†Lubowa said. Lubowa said KCC would soon privatise garbage collection. Ends
