A GOOD samaritan who tried to save Presidential Press Secretary, Mary Karooro Okurut’s life two years ago, ended up killing another person accidentally, writes Milton Olupot.

The incident has put Okurut in trouble with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, which want her to pay for the government vehicle that was damaged beyond repair.

PAC heard on Thursday that Okurut gave her car to Joseph Sande, two years ago but the driver knocked dead a pedestrian in the process.

The car overturned and was damaged beyond repair.

The committee chaired by Jack Sabiiti (Rukiga) ordered Okurut to pay for the vehicle which was allocated to her then, as a member of the Education Service Commission (ESC).

The ESC secretary, Mary Nannono, was ordered by PAC, to have the Hyundai vehicle re-valued to establish its value at the time of the accident.

She is to recover the money, less the scrap value. The ESC under secretary, Willaim Luwemba was present.

Nannono said the circumstances surrounding the accident were unavoidable and that it was unfair to have Okurut pay for the vehicle.
