MTN Uganda, a telecommunications company, has changed codes for its fixed lines, effective today, the chief marketing manager, Erik van Veen, announced yesterday.
Van Veen said the change to the new regional numbering system was part of the requirement by the Uganda Communications Commission who allocate both fixed and mobile code numbers.
He said the change now helps implement a national numbering plan.
Van Veen said their customers who have been using the 078 code, will now change to 03X prefix, where X stands for a specified region in Uganda.
For example, a telephone number 078261894 will now change to 031261894 for the central region, while telephone number 078123456 in Jinja will change to 033123456.
“As the second national operators, the new range integrates MTN into the East African numbering protocol. The 078 prefix was a temporary allocation to MTN by the UCC,” van Veen told reporters at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.
He said the change in the code will now help in distinguishing between local and national calls within Uganda, each attracting different call tariffs.
“This will also enable MTN to operate and maintain distance billing on its fixed line network. That is, customers making calls within the same region will be charged local tariffs, while customers calling from one region to another will be charged national tariffs,” he said.
Van Veen said the move will also help them be flexible with their tariffs.
The call tariffs will be sh125 and sh210 for local and national calls respectively, both minus Value Added Tax (VAT).
He said for the next six months, the 078 codes will run in parallel with the 031X prefix as customers adequately learn to use the latter. End
