Adjumani district’s efforts to construct pit latrines for the community met stiff resistance from the Dinka tribe claiming any one who uses a pit latrine would get bad luck, reports Nicholas Kajoba.
The district health inspector, David Ibayut, said latrine coverage in the district was 41%, which necessitated construction of more.
“We saw it as a necessity to construct more pit-latrines after the 41% coverage was too low but the Dinka tribe have refused the offer.” he said. He said according to Dinka culture it was taboo to use pit-latrines because all the luck would go. He said district officials have sensitised residents about hygiene and sanitation. Ends
