THE army on Thursday destroyed a Kony rebel training camp in Pader district.
One Lord’s Resistance Army rebel commander was killed.
Pader security sources said the camp was training about 150-200 rebels (abductees).
Six rebels were killed at Te-Ladwong and 15 abductees rescued in Patiko sub-county, Gulu on Wednesday. UPDF northern operations intelligence officer Lt. Col. Charles Otema-Awany said the dead rebel commander was identified by some LRA captives as Lukwiya.
Two UPDF soldiers were also killed at Aboke (Apac) on Thursday when the UPDF mistook them to be rebels, Otema said.
Pader LC5 chief Edwin Yakobo Komakech on Tuesday reportedly informed the UPDF high command in Gulu 4th Division that there were many LRA training camps in Pader in Lapono subcounty and in Puranga.
Meanwhile, Otema said six other rebels were killed by helicopter bombardment at Te-Ladwong.
He said at least 15 abductees were also rescued and many escaped on their own. He said one rebel was captured from the battle with his gun. This brings to about 170 abductees rescued by the UPDF since September.
Meanwhile, Chris Ocowoun and Kennedy Oryema report that it was a rude shock for 27 people fleeing the rebels when they found themselves squarely in their hands.
The incident took place at Idobo parish in Lalogi Division, Gulu district at 2:00pm on Saturday.
The scene is about 30kms east of Gulu town, on the Gulu-Moroto Road.
The fleeing residents were trying to beat the 48-hour deadline issued by the army to Gulu, Kitgum and Pader people to move to camps.
The directive seems not to have gone down well with the rebels who feel they would be isolated and easily dealt a blow.
The deadline has expired and the UPDF is expected to swing into action any time, sources said.
Heavy weaponry was seen being transported by rail in Kampala last week.
Sources who did not want to be named said the military hardware was headed for the north, to deal with the rebels once and for all.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pitched camp in Gulu and promised to finish Kony by March, 2003. Army chief Major General James Kazini recently promised to resign by December if Kony was not defeated.
Lalogi LC3 chief Santo Okello said about 30 rebels pounced on the defenceless civilians and ordered the 27 fleeing people to carry their loot, including food items.
Kony rebels have killed hundreds of civilians.
