MASAKA LC5 chairman Vincent Sempijja (right) has warned councilors who do not participate in collecting graduated tax to forfeit their allowances and salaries.
Sempijja was addressing a council meeting on Tuesday. He said the district would no longer use money for development to pay the salaries and allowances of councillors and other district officials.
He said most councillors were reluctant to collect taxes from the people because their allowances were assured.
“We shall no longer use the money received from the central government and other bodies to pay salaries and allowances. Let us all suffer until we develop the need to collect the taxes,’ he said.
He said it was surprising to see the new and smaller Bushenyi district collect more taxes than Masaka.
