Dear Counsellor,
I am a 12-year-old boy in P6. My English teacher gives me a hard time during her lessons. She tells me that we shall continue to be enemies so long as I maintain my “poor” handwriting and spelling mistakes. Whenever she comes to class, she criticises my handwriting before other children. This makes me feel that she actually dislikes me. She has made me dislike English as a subject. What should I do with this teacher?
D.O.
Kampala.

Dear D.O.,
It really hurts to be criticised before others. However, there is something positive in your situation. The teacher’s comments may sound negative and insensitive but they are aimed at bringing the best out of you.
She wants you to excel in your work (handwriting included). The comments are therefore made not out of date but out of love.
Disliking English because of the teacher may have a negative effect on your studies. Consider facing it differently. You can make our feelings be known to this teacher through any other teacher you trust. If she learns of the effect her statements have on you she will change her approach.

Are you facing any problems at school or at home? Is there a subject or teacher you particularly find difficult? Tell us about it.
