THE Government has borrowed US$48m from the African Development Bank (ADB) for the construction of six mental health units in referral hospitals in the country to supplement Butabika Hospital.
The state minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula, said this while commissioning the Dr. Matthew Lukwiya AIDS centre and maternity ward at Arua Hospital on Saturday.
Lukwiya, who was a doctor in St. Mary, Lacor Hospital, Gulu, died after contracting Ebola, while working to save victims from the deadly virus.
The centre and maternity ward were constructed and funded by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)-France at a cost of over US$40,000 and US$100,000 respectively.
Mukula said the mental health units would be constructed in the referral hospitals of several districts including Arua, Soroti, Hoima, and Jinja.
Mukula assured the Arua Hospital management that they would soon get eight more doctors, two specialists and recruit more nurses.
He said he was committed to see that health service delivery in the country improved.
“If it means coming to Arua 100 times in order to save lives, I’ll do that,” Mukula said.
