BUSINESS persons, students, tourists and other visitors to the United States will have to dig deeper into their pockets for the increasing cost of the US visa needed to enter the country.
The visa fee for non-immigrants will be increased to $100 from $65, starting November 1, 2002, the US State Department said yesterday in a statement quoted by the official bulletin, the Washington File.
This is the second time in six months the US government has increased the visa fee. In June, it was increased to $65.
The State Department says the falling number of visitors to the US following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, has prompted the increase.
Non-immigrant visas are issued to businesspersons, tourists, students and other visitors.
Mary Jeffers, the US Embassy Public Affairs Officer in Kampala, said the embassy would issue a press statement.
“We want the people to know about this increase in time,” Jeffers said.
“Effective November 1, 2002, the U.S. Department of State is raising the worldwide non-immigrant visa fee to $100. Currently $65, this processing fee is charged for all non-immigrant visa and border crossing card applications. This adjustment will bring the fee into line with the actual costs of administering non-immigrant visa services,” the State Department said.
“Added security screening procedures, restrictions on the role of support staff and further increases in management oversight have added to the cost of non-immigrant visa processing,” the State department said.
