THE Government has released sh500m to pay about 500 Luweero war debtors categorised as group B, to whom Government owes between sh300,000 and sh8m.
Frederick Kiwanuka reports that the first beneficiaries in group A, with debts falling below sh300,000 were paid early this year.
A source in the Luweero Triangle Ministry said on Tuesday that the cheques for the group B beneficiaries were already written pending delivery to the various district headquarters.
“Most of their cheques are ready. Next week they will be distributed to the districts for onward delivery to the sub-counties,” the source said.
The debt was incurred by the then NRA guerrilla forces during the 1986 bush war.
Initially, about 6,000 people claimed to have contributed cash and property towards the bush war, but most of the claims were dismissed by a 20-man verification committee which President Yoweri Museveni instituted to scrutinise the applications.
The successful applicants were classified into three categories, depending on the sizes of their claims.
The source said money to pay the third category, classified group C, who claim more than sh8m, is yet to be secured.
