When Mulindwa planted beautiful trees around his tall and razor wired fence, little did he know he was making it easy for thieves to break into his house.
It was not until thugs used the very trees to access his compound that he realised what a mistake he had done.
They broke into the house and stole valuable household property.
Like Mulindwa, there are many people who have unknowingly and unintentionally beaten their own home security by building strong perimeter walls, planting trees which grow so tall that they act as ladders for intruders to jump over the fences.
In home security, the first line of defence is usually the perimeter wall.
It is advisable that the perimeter wall or the fence must be strong enough not to easily let in intruders. The fence can be reinforced with broken bottles on top, razor wire, or electrified sires. The gate must be equally strong and as tall as the fence, and must touch the ground. After making sure you have a strong defence line, you can now beautify it by planting flowers either outside or inside the fence. The most fashionable ones are the clipping/ climbing plants.
However, you must be careful which type of flowers/plants you plant around your fence. The flowers/ trees must be kept as short as possible.
The police has found that many thugs are using trees as ladders.
It is advisable that the plants around the perimeter walls are thorny so that they cannot be easily climbed. The trees should also be short so that the branches do not hang over the fence to the inside compound. The plants should be thorny, or reinforced with barbed wire so that they cannot be used as steps to climb over the fence.
It is not advisable to plant creeping plants on the fence because they make the walls of the fence easy to climb. However, if they are to be used, they should be thorny or must be reinforced with barbed wire or electrified mechanisms. You need to balance beauty and security while choosing type of plants to put around your fence and to always keep them short.
