LRA kills five in Karuma bus ambush

AT least five passengers were early yesterday killed in an ambush on a bus at Ayago bridge, about 40km on the Karuma -Pakwach road, report Dennis Ojwee and Justin Moro.
It was the fifth Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) ambush in the area in recent months.
The Kampala-based Nile Coach Bus chief, Alick Mawa, said the driver, Isa Bwete, was killed together with four other unidentified passengers.
The bus, registration number 575 UED, was ambushed between Pajok Two and Ayago bridge, a spot notorious for LRA ambushes on the road.
Mawa said this was the fifth Nile Coach bus that has been ambushed after a recent one on September 19 in which four passengers were killed on the spot and many others taken and reportedly killed by rebels in the bushes later.
Bwete was the same driver who was ambushed in the September attack at the same spot.
Army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza said yesterday at least one person was killed.
He said the UPDF nearby forces reacted soon after the rebels attacked the bus and killed one rebel and recovered a landmine.
Bantariza said the attackers just stumbled onto the bus and that the incident should not be called an ambush.
“Slippers are normally few and what they do should not be called an ambush. Those are just slippers,†he said.
LRA rebels have fought the government for over 16 years.
From their bases in southern Sudan, the rebels have raided the northern districts, mostly civilian targets, killing and displacing thousands.
