Grace Nsubuga was the only hero in Uganda’s battle against Iraq on Monday.
Iraq stormed to a 3-1 win, but not before Nsubuga had earned Uganda her first full point from Ali Abdulla Gattea (2278).
The other Iraqis proved harder nuts to crack for Shadrack Kantinti, Steven Kawuma and Isaac Munanira.
Nsubuga, playing black pieces on Board 1 so overwhelmed Ali, forcing him to throw in the towel one move away from a checkmate.
Kantinti rated at 2200 stretched International Master Sarsam Saad (2409) until the end game, where Saad won through a pawn advantage.
Kawuma and Munanira’s games were evenly matched and the Iraqi FIDE Master Amjid Ali (2246) and Hayder Abdul Ghani (2238) had to rely on their higher rating over the Ugandans to bag their three points.
The Ugandans were last night battling Hong Kong who are rated 130 in Round 4.
All going well, the Ugandans should finish it off with a wide smile on their faces.
Uganda’s team will have Nsubuga on table 1, Kawuma (2), Isaac Munanira (3) and Olympiad debutant Emmanuel Mwaka (4) in his maiden game.
There will be 10 more rounds to go after the Hong Kong game.
The last round will be played on November 10 before the team returns to Kampala the next day.
