AN operational misunderstanding between Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) and Rwenzori ranges Guides and Escorts Association (GRRGEA) has ended with the two rival organisations agreeing to merge to promote tourism in the Rwenzori Mountains.
RMS the mother organisation and RRGEA a splinter group, agreed to work together at a meeting held October 23 organised by Kasese resident district commissioner Musa Ecweru.
The splinter group had earlier accused the leadership of RMS of mismanagement of the organisation’s funds raised from the revenue collected from tourists as Guides and Escorts fee.
The split in the organisation (RMS) had had a a negative effect on the number of tourists to the Rwenzori mountains as some of them felt insecure amidst conflict among the guides and escorts.
The split occurred more than one year ago after government declared the Rwenzori mountains safe for tourists arousing enthusiasm from the guides and escorts who had taken about four years without activity.
Before the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) waged war on the government in 1996 in the area, the RMS was handling over 1,000 tourists annually to the mountains.
With funding worth over sh600 million RMS constructed well facilitated tourist camps in the mountains.
The project was funded by the United States Agency for Intentional Development (USAID).
At the reconciliation meeting held at Club Thirties in Kasese town, the two organisations realised their misunderstanding was a liability to them and the whole sector. The meeting was chaired by a senior cadre in the RDC’s office on behalf of the RDC.
The top leadership of RMS and RRGEA attended the meeting. Ends
