IN order to improve on the quality of fish exports, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and the Mukono district council have constructed modern fish jetty at Kiyindi landing site.

IN order to improve on the quality of fish exports, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and the Mukono district council have constructed modern fish jetty at Kiyindi landing site.
The jetty worth sh17million and handles between 13-5 tonnes of fish for export a day, was constructed by District Development Programme (DDP) funds in order to ease the work of local exporters.
Fisheries officials in the district say that fish for export is handled through the jetty before it’s weighed and taken to fish factories for packing.
Mukono district fisheries officer, Romulus Mulambi said, “It is one of the measures taken to control our fish from going bad and to meet the international fish handling standards†he said.
The introduction of jetty has tremendously increased the handling and catching of mature fish. It handles between 13-5 tonnes of fish a day. Initially a total of 7 tonnes of fish was realised in day on the landing side.
The main specie of fish caught in the area for export is mainly Nile perch, Tilapia and Mukene.
The officials say that the international standards on export of fish to European Union (EU) countries mainly emphasise on the proper handling and hygiene of landing sites.
Five fish export companies, Hwang-Sung, Marine –agro, Uganda Fish packers and Ngege Limited, have played a big part in the redevelopment of the landing site.
A local company purchaser of Uganda fish packer said on average the four importers can get 13 tonnes of fish in day.
However they complained that there’s drastically decrease of fish in water due to over fishing and bad weather.
“The output of fish is low because of the over fishing and bad weather especially in November and October†the officials say.
The routine inspection of landing sites in neighbouring districts like Iganga and Mayuge is carried out in liaison with authorities to it that fishermen keep proper hygiene and curb illegal fishing.Ends
