LOCAL councillors who hear defilement cases in Pallisa district will be prosecuted under by-laws to be enacted soon by the district councils, the district vice-chairperson has said.
Mrs. Angella Achere told a gathering at celebrations to mark the Day of the African Child in the district at Kachomo primary school in Kaderuna sub-county last week, that parents who do not feed their children at school will also be prosecuted.
She said rampant defilement cases and early marriages presided over by LCs had greatly undermined the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme. She said such practices contributed to poor academic performance.
The district probation and child welfare officer, Ms. Grace Kirya, called upon religious and civic leaders to assist in sensitising communities against child marriages and defilement and let girls attend school.
The deputy RDC, Ms. Robinah Nabbanja, urged women to resist men who marry off their daughters at a tender age and those who employ children.
She said women should not employ children to baby-sit for them. Ends
