LUWEERO assistant RDC Caleb Tukaikiriza has complained that herdsmen in the district, have refused to abandon okukyiriza(lifting), a primitive Kinyankole/Kiga culture where young girls are grabbed from homes and forcefully married to men without their consent writes Vision reporter.
Tukaikiriza said the practice was mostly common in Ngoma and Kinyogoga sub-counties in Nakaseke county. The area is predominantly inhabited by Banyankore and Banyarwanda herdsmen.
“It is primitive. I have tried to discourage it but they still do it,†Tukairiza said this recently. He threatened to arrest the culprits.
