ETHICS and integrity minister Miria Matembe has challenged Ofwono Opondo, the Movement Director of Information, to provide concrete evidence implicating the four MPs who allegedly solicited for bribes from businessmen and government bureaucrats.

In a phone interview with The New Vision, Matembe said the allegations were grave.

“When I heard it, I was very shocked. Allegations about MPs being corrupt is not a simple matter. These are serious matters that must be substantiated,” she said.

She said if evidence was adduced, the MPs would be prosecuted.

Ofwono in turn said, “Matembe should also come out and bring her evidence of MPs involved in sex scandals.”

He named Ibanda north MP Capt. Guma Gumisiriza, Lt. James Kinobe (Katikamu north), Lydia Balemezi (Mukono) and Yeri Apollo (Tororo Municipality) as MPs with questionable dealings. He said he had received a number of allegations from the public about the misconduct of the four MPs and others who were not named.

The implicated MPs will address a press conference today at Parliament.

The IGG, Jotham Tumwesigye, called for thorough investigations. He said he had not been asked to investigate the matter. “If they ask me to investigate, I will do it but I think it is important that Parliament goes ahead with the investigations,” he said.
