MAKERERE University Guild President Dennis Okema has decried the current menu of mainly posho following the recent budget cut across Government ministries and departments.

Dennis Okema told the parliamentary committee on social services and university management that the students were faced with hunger.

Okema said, “Food is not a privilege but a right.”

He said in some halls of residence, students were feeding on only posho, adding that suppliers had refused to supply matooke and rice.

The committee led by Dorothy Hyuha (Tororo) was on a two-day familiarisation tour.
They visited Lumumba Hall, Mary Stuart, Faculty of Science, department of Women and Gender Studies and the Institute of Computer Science.

The MPs heard that the Government had not yet released sh790m for November, which would cover food, living allowance and faculty allowance.

The officials said the university would have a deficit of sh400m in three months if the budget cuts were effected.
