Bus operators have hiked transport fares to upcountry destinations, as Christmas draws near.

But the fares charged by commuter taxis belonging to the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers’ Association (UTODA) plying upcountry routes were still stable by yesterday afternoon, as per the assurance of UTODA chairman, Haji Musa Katongole.

At the Baganda Bus Park, some buses made a slight increase, while others increased their fares by over half of the original fee.

Some operators warned that the fares would double if conditions demanded.

But travellers were not deterred by the fares and continued to jam the bus park.

A round-up by The New Vision yesterday revealed that fares to Fort Portal had risen from sh10,000 to sh13,000. Mbale rose from sh7,000 to sh10,000, Mbarara shot from sh7000 to sh10,000, Masaka Gaso bus fares rose to sh4,000 from sh2,500 and sh3,500 to sh5,000 in Omni buses.

However, northern Uganda bus fares remained stable at sh12,000.
