MPs meet
GULU — President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday received a delegation of 10 MPs from the West Nile region. The 2nd Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Brigadier Moses Ali, led the delegation, according to a statement from State House, Nakasero. They discussed issues pertaining to the maintenance and enhancement of peace and development in West Nile.

Police deploy
KAMPALA — The traffic police have beefed-up operations in Kampala and on upcountry routes during the festive season. Kampala Extra Regional Traffic Officer Gabriel Tibayungwa said more policemen had been deployed at the taxi parks to ensure that vehicles did not carry excess passengers. “Our people are already on the ground and are going to be very vigilant,” Tibayungwa said.

Cattle ban
KAMPALA — The Police have banned the transportation of cattle into the city at night during the Christmas season. The regional Police chief, Ahmed Wafuba, yesterday said the ban would check the tendency of bringing stolen cattle into the city. “Divisional Police Commanders are already on alert and will be there to check all the cases of stolen cattle being brought into the city,” he said.

Gowon trial
KAMPALA — Hearing of the murder trial of Major General Yusuf Gowon was on Wednesday adjourned to December 30, after his lawyer, Caleb Alaka, failed to show up in court. Gowon asked Justice Moses Mukiibi to adjourn the hearing because Alaka was representing Major General Ali Bamuze’s UNRF II rebels in their peace talks with the Government, that are taking place in Arua.

UWESO gets
KAMPALA – Century Bottling Company on Wednesday handed over sh16.2m to the First Lady, Janet Museveni, to support the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO). The money was received from the ‘Buy One Help One’ Coca-Cola campaign where every two shillings realised from each soda bottle was donated to UWESO.

New syllabus,/b>
KAMPALA – The Friedrich Ebert Foundation in conjunction with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has approved a two-year training syllabus for journalists. It leads to award of diploma. The syllabus was approved at the 21st Academic Steering board meeting at the NCDC, Kyambogo, recently.

Bishop says
KAMPALA – Retired Bishop of Mityana, the Rt. Rev. Yokaana Mukasa, on Wednesday criticised couples who do not plan to have big families and yet they are wealthy enough to do so. Mukasa made the criticism in an interview shortly after he launched his new book, Okukyala Kwomusumba (Pastoral visit), at Namirembe Centenary Publishing House Ltd.

MPs block EU loan
KAMPALA — The parliamentary committee on national economy yesterday refused to approve a sh73b loan, citing lack of adequate information on how the loan would be used. The 1% interest European Investment Bank loan with a maturity period of 12 years and a grace period of five years, is being sought by the ministry of finance to be lent out for private sector development through commercial banks.

Party cited in Wakiso feud
WAKISO — The district chairman, Eng. Ian Kyeyune, has said the recent disagreement among councillors will not tear the district apart. He said the 12 councillors boycotted the council meeting recently because the end of year cocktail party was not included on the agenda. “The truth is that these councillors boycotted because they wanted a cocktail party which was not included on the agenda,” Kyeyune said recently.

85-year-old man jailed
KAMPALA — A Nakawa court yesterday sentenced an 85-year-old man to a sh200,000 fine or 12 months imprisonment, for hacking his neighbour’s cows. Grade One Magistrate J.B. Byarugabaha, convicted Asanansio Kizito of Mulawa village Kira sub-county, Wakiso district, after he pleaded guilty to the charge. Court heard that on August 14, Kizito hacked Eric Ssekimpi’s cow on the tail and another on the thigh using a panga.
