SC Villa started the season in championship defending fashion with a narrow 1-0 away victory over Lira based Akol FC at Akii Bua stadium.

Villa’s youngest player Patrick Ochan proved the unlikely hero when he struck the winner in his first competitive outing for the champions in the 20th minute.

Ochan,17, a close season acquisition from Standard High School, connected neatly from a Phillip Ssozi cross on a bad Akii-Bua stadium ground in Lira.

The defender-turned striker was, on many other occasions, a threat to the usually packed Akol defence.

But, the hosts, eager to secure their first Nile Special Super League win, put up a spirited show with counter attacking moves, efficiently thwarted by Villa’s disciplined rearguard.

As the struggle for maximum points heightened, the match also got more physical resulting in two yellow cards for the hosts while Ochan, Sam Mubiru and Kasongo Ekuchu were booked on the visitors’ side.

Villa coach Micho Sredojevich said it was a good start despite failing to secure a bigger win. “We intend to build on every game,” said the Yugoslav coach who faces Simba on Thursday at Namboole.

The victory, though slim, will come as a welcome boost to the league heavyweights, who must sharpen quickly for a four-pronged challenge on the CECAFA, league, Kakungulu and the CAF Champions’ league.

Witnessing the defeat from the terraces was Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) chief Dennis Obua, who doubles as Akol’s patron.
