By George Kibumba A suppository is medicine designed for insertion into the rectum. If a suppository is swallowed, it may not work. A suppository gives out the drug into the body as fast as an injection would. Suppositories are designed for children or very sick people who cannot swallow. They can carry drugs into bodies of unconscious people. Suppositories are also used to treat infections in the rectum. You can learn to insert a suppository quickly and easily. Be cautious, though. Only use rectal suppositories or other laxatives when they are prescribed. Follow these simple steps when a rectal suppository has been prescribed. l It is best to store your suppositories in the refrigerator or a cold place. Suppositories melt when stored in hot conditions. The melt containing the drug may escape from the wrapping. Leaky suppositories are likely to contain less drug than the expected amount. l Wash your hands with soap/water and remove the foil wrapper on the suppository. l If you have trouble removing the foil wrapper, the suppository may be too soft to insert. Hold it under cold running water until it becomes firm or put it in the freezer for a minute or two before inserting it – just do not let it get too cold and hard. l Once you have removed the foil wrapper, moisten the suppository with clean water. l Lie on your side with your knees raised toward your chest. Take a deep breath as you gently insert the suppository – rounded end first – into the anus with your finger. Push the suppository in as far as your finger will go to keep the suppository from coming out. l Once the suppository is in place, you will feel an immediate urge to go to the toilet. Resist the urge by lying still and breathing deeply a few times. Try to retain the suppository for at least 20 minutes so your body has time to absorb it and get maximum effect from it. l Wash your hands again with soap and water.
