By Grace Matsiko UNKNOWN gunmen yesterday morning opened fire at presidential candidate Kizza Besigye's campaign team, which was hanging campaign posters around the city. The attackers shot the team's white pickup at around 5.20a.m on Kampala Road, opposite Fido Dido Restaurant. The deputy regional CID officer, Kampala, Mr. P. Egesa, said the incident was not reported to the Police. "There was a shooting but nobody came to complain to us," Egesa said. Besigye's campaign official, Frank Byaruhanga, who was in the vehicle during the attack, said the gunmen were removing Besigye's posters. Police deputy spokesman Eric Naigambi said investigations were going on. "There was a group pinning posters and then there was another group opposed to it. We were told there was shooting. We are investigating how that group got guns," Naigambi said. Byaruhanga blamed the attack on a group loyal to President Museveni. But Museveni's deputy publicity secretary, Ofwono Opondo, denied the allegations. "This is part of an orchestrated plan to hurt the credibility of candidate Museveni. Besigye and Winnie have persistently said Museveni has a hitlist of people who should be eliminated before the elections," Ofwono said. "Kampala is full of thugs. People are robbed everyday. Does Besigye's team want to say it is Museveni's supporters robbing people?" he asked and advised the complainants to inform the Police. Ends
