EDITOR: The Government's decision to make massive recruitment of teachers is a blessing to Universal Primary Education (UPE). Lack of teachers in primary schools has been a big problem facing UPE programme ever since it was initiated. But with that move, the Ministry of Education is likely to overcome that problem, if it succeeds. However, with the entry requirements to be registered by Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK) for training, the process may prove to be difficult for the ministry to get the number of teachers. For one to be registered by ITEK for training, one needs to have passed O level with six pass of which math and english is a must. That alone leaves out many O level leavers who may be competent than the retired teachers. I therefore request the ministry to first organise competency tests for those competent teachers to help them to get the entry requirements to join the teaching profession. These competency tests may be organised by the districts supervised by Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). With that trend I hope the ministry will achieve its objectives as soon as possible.
