Francis Bwengye joined the race for the Presidency following a power struggle in his party-the Democratic Party(DP).
l Born on November 16, 1942 in Mubanda village, Ruhinda county, Bushenyi District.
l Went to Rubangizi Primary School, St. Charles Lwanga Kasasa, St. Mary's College Kisubi and St. Mary's College Kitovu.
l He then joined the Mbale School of Hygiene where he did a three-year Diploma in Hygiene. He worked as Health Inspector in Ankole District before joining Kampala City Council KCC) where he worked until 1974.
l Served as City Advocate for Kampala City Council soon after completing his Bachelor of Laws degree at Makerere University in 1977.
l Went into legal practice and was also appointed Secretary General of the Democratic Party (DP) ahead of the 1980 general elections.
l His first wife died in 1989. He re-married in 1991. He has ten children
l In 1995, Bwengye lost the race to represent Ruhinda County in the Constituent Assembly to Col. Kahinda Otafiire. He campaigned for Paul Ssemogerere as his Western region campaign manager in the 1996 Presidential elections.
Bwengye's manifesto:
w To provide solutions to all the 'economic ills' which have plagued the country, notably poverty and inflation.
w To provide clean leadership that is not tainted with corruption, nepotism and sectarianism.
w To professionalise the army by ensuring that it is well equipped, well-housed and motivated.
w To end insurgency through peace talks with the rebels.
w To provide employment for the youth.
