GOVERNMENT has released sh60m to finance poverty alleviation projects in Kampala, the Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Cranimer Kalinda, has said, reports Catherine Ntabadde. Kalinda said the money, released through the Poverty Alleviation Fund (PAF), will be given out to individuals and groups in the five division of the city. Speaking to The New Vision on Tuesday, Kalinda said his office will supervise the project. "Government has released this money to fight poverty in the five divisions of Kampala and my office will be supervising the work," he said. He said the money was released after surveys carried out by PAF in which they found out that poverty in urban areas is widespread like in any other part of the country. Kalinda said the project is particularly targeting the youth, elderly and people in search of self-employment. He added that the project, which started mid last year, has already given out sh36m to non-governmental organisations in Nakawa and Makindye. "Poverty Alliviation Fund started mid last year and it has already given out sh36m to NGOs in Nakawa and Makindye," Kalinda said. He said the second phase of the PAF programme would cater for projects in Kawempe, Rubaga and Central divisions. Kalinda said projects to be started include fish farming, cattle rearing, poultry and bakery. He said 45 organisations in Nakawa division had applied for the loans, 92 in Makindye, 19 in Central, 12 in Rubaga and 13 in Kawempe. He said the applications were being studied by his office. Ends
