UABF fundraises for African championship

CASH-strapped Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) is in a fundraising drive to enable it enter a team for the Africa Boxing Championship due next month.

By Robert Bukenya and Samson Opus CASH-strapped Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) is in a fundraising drive to enable it enter a team for the Africa Boxing Championship due next month. UABF secretary Issa Odongkara yesterday said the federation requires at least sh18m for the championship May 18-22 in Mauritius. As part of the fundraising drive UABF has invited Tanzania for a friendly build April 15 at Lugogo. "This championship will be a good exposure to our boxers ahead of the Commonwealth Games," said the UABF official. The Bombers are being rejuvenated after the top cream joined paid ranks in Australia after the Sydney Olympic last year. UABF has meanwhile selected 27 boxers to start non residential training in readiness for the Tanzania friendly. UABF official Mohammed Ssebuguzi, released names with a warning that the pugilists turn up for training ahead of trials. Twelve boxers will be selected during trials to meet Tanzania. Meanwhile, the national league resumes this weekend at Hollywood theatre in a Kampala suburb, Katwe. Sebuguzi said the tournament will involve three weight categories; flyweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight. Powerhouse Lukanga boxing club leads the 15-club event with 16 points. UPDF, Basajjabalaba Hides and Skins (BHS), Serwadda and Makindye follow with eight respectively. Ends
