By Josephine Maseruka Haji Musa Wakibi, the proprietor of Musa Body Construction Company Limited, on Wednesday collapsed after his property was attached by the Non Performing Assets Recovery Trust (NPART). NPART evicted Wakibi from the premises in Katwe town which he had turned into a university. Wakibi fainted on the way to Katwe Police Station where he had taken refuge. He is, however, improving at Mulago Hospital where he was admitted with hypertension. Wakibi's property was attached after he failed to repay a US$95,700 loan he acquired from the Uganda Development Bank on March 16, 1990. The loan was for the purchase of a Lathe and Forge machinery from Germany, workshop equipment, a pick-up truck and initial working capital. The company offered its assets at Plot 651, Block 7, Katwe Commercial Centre as security. The loan, which was payable in six years, with a 28% interest rate has accumulated to sh 210m. The Managing Director of the company, also Wakibi's daughter, Hasifa Nabatanzi, yesterday said the bank delivered second-hand machinery four years from the date of the loan offer. She also said the pick-up truck was never delivered. "We appeal to government to intervene in the matter because UDB never offered guidance to the loan beneficiaries and NPART is sending us bills without considering our case," Nabatanzi said. The NPART Manager Finance and Administration, Mr. Julius Izimba, yesterday said they first seek cooperation from debtors. "If we get access to property the debtor is not evicted. Wakibi resisted and started removing some machinery from the premises on Sunday. That is why we came in and put security," Izimba said. Ends
