By Nathan Etengu THE Police in Bugiri town on Tuesday fired several shots in the air to disperse a mob that wanted to forcefully seize and lynch suspected robbers detained at the Police station. Some of the rioters were caned as they advanced towards the police station. Ms. Catherine Naava Nabagesera, the Resident District Commissioner and Mr. Muganzi, the district police commander, told The New Vision on telephone that the Police had to put up stiff resistance to scare off the mob. "They wanted to remove the four suspects from the Police cells and lynch them but we had to resist," Nabagesera said. She said the suspects had been arrested in connection with the Monday night murder of a businessman, Eddy Steven Namuda. The victim was attacked at his shop in Bugiri town and robbed of cash and household property before he was hacked and left for dead. Muganzi said Namuda was taken by sympathisers to Bugiri hospital where he died on arrival. A source in Bugiri town told The New Vision that the irate mob were waiting for the Police to exhaust their bullets so as to storm the station to remove the suspects. Nabagesera, however, said the suspects had already been transferred to Iganga under tight security. "We did not want a repeat of the past incidents," she said. A student was recently shot dead by the Police in Bugiri following a disputed football match between students of Alliance Victory and Standard secondary schools. Ends
