African mayors, do the same

SIR- Never has the United States had a Mayor as Ed Koch who was Mayor of New York, America's bustling city. During the Reagan Administration, America's mayors were tested. "The cities were going to be on their own. The federal purse would be snatched away. From now on the mayors would have to "replace dependency with invention". But this was a big challenge to the mayors and the cities. This autonomy would mean they develop their own politics, policies and programmes to solve the vast and acute problems of the American cities: The sub-ways which look like a war-zone, streets without light or policemen, crime and unemployment. During his time of office, Koch practiced the politics of development and survival. African mayors and cities can do a lot to create beautiful cities. Rev Francis Aseete. Soroti
