By John B. B. Nzinjah About four people have been killed in landslides and floods in various parts of Kasese district on Monday last week. Crops and property were also destroyed. The landslide and wide spread floods follow heavy rains in the district in the last two weeks. The worst hit areas were in the sub-counties of Kyarumba, Kilembe and Kichwamba. In Kyarumba trading centre in Bukonzo East, three people including a woman and her child were drowned by floods from River Nyamugasana, causing great panic among the residents. By the time the New Vision arrived in the area last Monday, the floods had created a stream of about 2,000 metres wide covering the river valley that stretches from Kyarumba to Katwe into Lake Edward, a distance of about 20 kilometres. At Kiburara trading centre in Kisinga sub-county, traffic was paralysed as vehicles from Bwera and Kasese towns stood on either side of the heavily flooded river, fearing to cross through the swift running water roaring metres above the bridge. In another development, a primary six girl was killed and 14 houses washed down by a landslide in Kyambogho village in Kilembe sub-county Busongora north. The area LC1 chairman, William Bahati Biregho, identified the girl as Janet Biira, a pupil at Kyambogho primary school. Biregho said property and an unspecified number of domestic animals were washed downhill and buried by mud from the landslide. Recently, over 200 people in Hima trading centre fled their homes due to floods from the mountains. Ends
