Four bridges crossing major rivers in Kapchorwa district were last week destroyed by floods following heavy rains, the district works engineer, Albert Lachawu

By Rashid Muzungyo Four bridges crossing major rivers in Kapchorwa district were last week destroyed by floods following heavy rains, the district works engineer, Albert Lachawu, said on Friday. He told The New Vision that two of the bridges across River Cheseber and River Chaptui have cut off communication along the Sironko-Kapchorwa main road. Lachawu said the two bridges require sh42m for reconstruction. He said over 100 vehicles including heavy commercial trucks, operate daily along the road. He advised drivers of heavy commercial trucks to suspend using the road until repairs are done. Lachawu said the heavy rain destroyed two other bridges along the Kabat-uban and Kapteret-hebany feeder roads in Tegeres sub-county in Tingey county. "Government should consider this as an emergency to release funds for the repair of the bridges because we have no vote to handle these emergencies," Lachawu said in an interview at the district administration offices. He appealed to the Ministry of Works to mobilise funds to repair the bridges to restore the "crippled communication services." Sources in the district said the construction work along Sironko-Kapchorwa main road had been suspended on different sections because of the rains and heavy road construction machinery were at standstill because of the muddy roads.
