Blue Fish Found In Lira River

A NEW strange species of fish, blue in colour, has been discovered in river Moroto in Lira district, reports Martin Kiiza. Speaking at the close of a five-day training workshop for district fisheries officers from Lira, John Peter Ariong said the scientific name of the fish is "clarius garlepinus." He said it was of the "cat-fish" species. Ariong, who came along with the fish species, handed them over to the scientists at the Fisheries Resources Research Institute (FIRRI). He said people living on river Moroto bank at Otuke and Moroto counties expressed the fear that the fish whose soup is blue when cooked may be poisonous. He said several families were eating the fish. Acting FIRRI director Dr. Timothy Twongo, said a study was done on the fish whose samples were being kept at the FIRRI's aquatic biodiversity education museum. The workshop, organised by EU, African and the Caribbean countries, attracted fisheries officers from Katakwi, Soroti, Lira, Kumi, Masindi, Nakasongola and Luweero districts. Ends
