THE Commercial Court on Monday, issued a warrant of arrest for Samia Bugwe North MP, Aggrey Awori, for failure to appear in court on Friday.
Awori, who is also a former presidential candidate, was scheduled to appear in court to show cause why he should not be arrested after failing to pay a debt of over sh18m to Greenland Bank.
A suit filed at the court states that Awori applied to Dr. Sulaiman Kigundu, the former Managing Director of the bank, to obtain a loan of sh10m for six months, to facilitate his fish export business, which he was granted in December 1997.
The plaint further states that although Awori acknowledged his indebtedness, "he neglected to pay both the principal and the interest, which has accumulated to sh17, 143, 863."
Through its lawyers, Muwanguzi, Zziwa and Company Advocates, the bank asked court to enter judgement in its favour because Awori had refused to respond to court summons.
"The defendant having failed to apply for leave to defend himself and counsel for the plaintiff having applied for judgement under summary procedure, it is decreed that judgement be entered in favour of the plaintiff," Zziwa said.
