Lukanga for Dar meet

LUKANGA Boxing Club will represent Uganda at the sixth edition of the Champions of champions (Mabingwa wa Mabingwa) tournament July 21-30 in Dar es Salaam.

By Peter Ekarot and Samson Opus LUKANGA Boxing Club will represent Uganda at the sixth edition of the Champions of champions (Mabingwa wa Mabingwa) tournament July 21-30 in Dar es Salaam. Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) press officer Mohammed Ssebuguzi disclosed yesterday that the national side, the Bombers does not have funds to make the trip. "Lukanga will represent Uganda in the Dar competition. The Uganda team (Bombers) does not have funds," said Ssebuguzi. Eight boxers will present the local champions and four officials will accompany the team that leaves Kampala on July 18. On the accountability of the sh3.4m, Ssebuguzi, also vice chairman of Buganda Boxing Committee that organised the event on behalf of UABF said: "We have asked treasurer Patrick Sendijja to give us a report on the funds and we shall then brief UABF. There has been a delay, but all is fine." Teams that have confirmed participation in the Dar es Salaam tournament are Lukanga, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Kenya Prisons and hosts Tanzania. The debutantes stretched their lead to 11 points after winning four more bouts in the last preliminaries at Lugogo yesterday. St. Jude of stronghold Naguru remained the strongest challenger with eight points, one away from Kampala High who were tied at seven points with Citizen High School. The highlight of the rather lacklustre beginners' tournament was in a toe-to-toe lightweight contest where Ismail Lutaaya (St. Mary's Kyengera) subdued Patrick Lugolobi (Equatorial) to submission in round two. The other closest fight was between Bosco Mawa (K'la High) and Vincent Sendiya (K'la Citizen) won by Mawa on points. The tournament that drew 227 boxers enters quarter finals from 2.00 p.m today.
