THE Electoral Commission (EC), has finalised arrangements to implement the photographic voter register and identification system in preparation for local government elections next year.
This was revealed on Monday by Eflance Kiwanuka, the acting secretary to the Electoral Commission, at the opening of a training for trainers' workshop for over 200 Electoral Commission officials at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
Kiwanuka said the process was aimed at attaining excellence in future elections in the country through computerising all the National Voters' Register.
Charles Owiny, the commissioner in-charge of projects at the Electoral Commission, said a pilot study which was carried out indicated and proved that the project was feasible and would meet the aspirations of the commission.
He said all the necessary equipment to implement the project had been acquired, installed and tested.
Voters have been assured that the project was applicable and the technology had been adapted to address the unique circumstances of Uganda.
Meanwhile, the election of the interim district chairpersons in the newly created districts of Kanungu, Kaberamaido and Nakapiririt are to be held today.
The directly elected councillors and women councillors representing the sub-counties of the new districts in the original districts will constitute the Electoral Colleges for the elections. EC officials will oversee the elections.
